Public Day - Healthy Cities

By 2050, two thirds of the world’s population will be living in cities. What impact will growing cities and increasingly aging societies have on health care? How can we achieve healthy lifestyles in expanding cities and megacities? How important is the opportunity for physical activity – and who will pay for it?

It is questions such as these that will be addressed at the WHS Public Day on Wednesday, October 22. Join the debate on how to ensure a healthy life both now and in the future.

Among the speakers are:

- Klaus Wowereit (Governing Mayor, Berlin)
- Jacques Rogge (Hon. President, International Olympic Committee - IOC)
- Sarah Cook (Director, UN Research Institute for Social Development)
- Klaus Böger (President, Landessportbund Berlin)
- Gudrun Doll-Tepper (Vice-President, German Olympic Sports Confederation)
- Frank Dassler (General Counsel, adidas Group)
- Moritz Rinke (Author)

Welcome Messages of the High Patrons of the World Health Summit 2014

"...The international community is currently at a crucial stage. What is important now is that we set the course for ambitiously expanding the Millennium Development Goals. Hence, I am very pleased that this year’s World Health Summit will focus, among other things, on the links between climate change and health. ..."

"...This year’s World Health Summit thus focuses on the influence of climate change on our health. The Summit, which is relevant to people the world over, precedes the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) to be held in Paris in December 2015. Each Summit participant will therefore make their own contribution. ..."

"...When European citizens are asked about their priorities for the 15 next years, health and medical care emerge as the number one concern. European citizens also believe that the greatest impact of science and technological innovation will be on health improvement. Health-oriented policymaking must therefore become a clear priority. ..."

WHS 2014: Workshops

Global Health Education

Workshop (WS 04)
Monday, October 20

Physicians are expected to deal with any disease affecting the health of their individual patients. Tomorrow’s 21st century physicians must also have sufficient understanding of the complex interplay across all determinants of health affecting the health of patients and societies.

This workshop will examine the challenges of globalization and health and prioritize those that should be included in a worldwide harmonized global health curriculum.

Role of Private Sector in Universal Health Coverage
Workshop (WS 10)
Tuesday, October 21

Universal Health Coverage has received considerable attention at a global stage, particularly within the debate of the post-2015 development goals. But to exert its full power it has to be understood in a way that points beyond the health sector and beyond matters of financing.

The topic concerns more than just health insurance and health systems. The solution lies in an expression of the social contract between a government and its people for the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health and the commitment to health equity and health as a human right.

Health Systems after Megadisasters
Workshop (WS 11)
Tuesday, October 21

"Lessons from Fukushima and the Role of Medical Academia”: Three years after the disasterous accident in the Tohoku region of Japan on March 11, 2011, health hazards to the public still remain. Furthermore, the immediate risks of injury and death are shadowed by various longer term problems including anxiety about possible physical effects of exposure to radiation.

This session will review the recent tragedy and its ongoing consequences as a platform to highlight the role of medical academia.
