1. Brief History
The University of São Paulo (USP) is a public university, maintained by the State of São Paulo and affiliated with the State Secretariat of Economic, Scientific and Technological Development. Today, the University of São Paulo is one of the most important institutions of higher learning in Brazil. In 1934, its nucleus was the School of Philosophy, Sciences and Languages, with professors coming from France, Italy, Spain, Germany and other European countries. USP combined several independent research and higher-educational institutions, including the already existent Medical School (Faculdade de Medicina), Polytechnic School (Escola Politécnica), "Luiz de Queiroz" College of Agriculture (Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz), and Law School (Faculdade de Direito).

Focus / Key Aspects:
USP focused on training teachers for secondary schools, experts in sciences, engineers, lawyers, physicians and professors.
4. Partnerships and Programs
Internationalization is one of USP’s guidelines. The University believes it is of utmost importance to establish partnerships with organizations of various countries, so as to create new integration bonds and to maintain the already existing ones.
The mobility of students and professors, as well as participation in networks and consortia such as the Erasmus Mundus Program, the Association of Universities of Portuguese language (AULP), the Magalhães Network, among others, are an example of this goal.
