Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine

Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine has a long history that spans well over a century. Since it was founded in 1899 as Kyoto Imperial University College of Medicine, the School has always attracted many students and researchers.

The Graduate School of Medicine currently offers four majors: Medicine, Medical Science, Public Health and Human Health Science. The school provides students with an insight into leading-edge clinical science, with each major comprising a broad array of programs covering virtually all aspects of medical research, including basic, clinical and social medicine, and medical technology.

In 2006, the graduate course amalgamated six majors into one, removing the traditional barriers between them. In addition, the school has established cross-disciplinary educational courses which provide specialized training programs for researchers. The Graduate School of Medicine aims to guide students to understand and appreciate the philosophy and social implications of medical research, and prepare them to become leading international clinicians and researchers.

Kyoto University School of Public Health

Kyoto University School of Public Health was established in 2000, and was the first institution of its kind in Japan, offering the degrees of Master of Public Health (MPH) and Doctor of Public Health (DrPH). The school explores the integrated socio-ecological approach for health, referred to as the “New Public Health.”

To meet the new health challenges of the 21st century, it combines classic public health fields such as communicable and chronic disease control, family health, nutrition and environmental health with new fields such as clinical epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, socioepidemiology, behavial science, health promotion, informatics, economics, and ethics. This innovative approach to public health is pursued by the school’s eighteen departments, which welcome motivated students and professionals from around the world with diverse backgrounds, including the medical, natural and social sciences..
