Honors
Professor Peter Piot (Director, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) has been honoured by Her Majesty The Queen for his services to the global response to AIDS and the Ebola epidemic. He was awarded an Honorary Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Honorary Awards.
After receiving the prestigious and rare Honorary Doctorship from Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin at the Freie Universität Berlin in December, WHS President Professor Detlev Ganten received a "Honorary Degree in Medicine" from Universidade de Coimbra in January. The ceremony was held in the university's 'Great Hall of Acts'.
The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine has been crowned University of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards 2016. The judges unanimously selected the school for its “extraordinary” response to the Ebola crisis. The institution established a task force to deploy teams into affected areas, and allowed experts across its faculties to turn their attention to the epidemic without risking loss of funding or income.
