Looking back on the 10th World Health Summit in Berlin, we are overwhelmed by the overall interest it drew, as well as the quality of contributions and level of commitment at the event.
The 2,400 participants from over 100 nations enjoyed an atmosphere of curiosity and pursued common goals by collectively investing time and expertise. The 300 speakers addressed a broad range of global health issues in over 50 sessions.
World leaders from academia, politics, civil society and the private sector together discussed new strategies in strengthening health systems, how to best prepare for the next pandemic, and the chances and challenges posed by the digital healthcare revolution.

Opening Ceremony with a video message from the ISS
As a special highlight, ISS Commander Alexander Gerst addressed the World Health Summit participants in a video message at the opening ceremony. High-level speakers at the kick-off included the German Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn and Nobel laureate Elizabeth Blackburn, who made strong statements for open science, data sharing, and the position of women in research.

Global Action Plan for Healthy Lives and Well-being for All
At the conference, the Director-General of the World Health Organization Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus presented a plan aimed at aligning cooperation among major global health organizations to help reach UN health targets. He said that "fragmentation, duplication and inefficiency are undermining progress. We must do something differently." The document was signed by eleven leading global health organizations the same day.

Joint Plenary Session with the Grand Challenges Annual Meeting
In a nod to the World Health Summit's 10th anniversary, the Grand Challenges Annual Meeting organized by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation took place back-to-back with the World Health Summit in Berlin this year. In a Joint Plenary Session, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, Microsoft Founder Bill Gates, and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized their strong support for tandem progress towards achieving the health-related Sustainable Development Goals.

M8 Alliance Statement: Health is a Driving Force for the SDGs
|
The M8 Alliance Berlin Declaration 2018 stresses the central role of health as a driving force in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and advocates a holistic and science-driven approach to solving the global health challenges.

World Health Summit Startup Award 2018
|
60 startups from 19 countries had applied to take part in the World Health Summit Startup competition. 25 of them were invited to visit the conference. There, ten finalists had the opportunity to pitch their ideas to the jury and the World Health Summit audience. In the end, India-based firm Eyeluminati took the laurels for its glove Manovue – the word’s first intelligent personal assistant for the visually impaired. According to the jury, "the solution allows those affected barrier-free access and therefore social participation, empowering them to lead independent lives." Research scientist and innovator Roopam Sharma received the award at a ceremony during the World Health Summit Night.

New Voices in Global Health
Out of 99 applications received from 40 countries, the World Health Summit Scientific Committee chose ten winners to actively participate in the World Health Summit 2018. The young scientists selected presented their research results in a poster exhibition. The New Voices in Global Health initiative seeks to strengthen research and to support young academics worldwide.

Charité and LSHTM agree on future cooperation
At the 2018 World Health Summit, representatives from the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance collaboration and cooperation in global health. The two kicked off the partnership with the announcement that a group of LSHTM researchers is to be based at the Charité to establish the initial stages of the partnership and identify joint research opportunities.
