WHS President Hélène Boisjoly – an introduction to the event
|
From the health of migrants to the Zika virus to the challenges facing indigenous peoples and migrant populations, major issues on a global scale will be addressed during the WHS Regional Meeting being held at Montreal’s Palais des Congrès on May 8-9.
“It’s really going to be a world tour of all the major health issues in just two days,” said Hélène Boisjoly, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at University of Montreal, as she introduced the event program.
“Even though certain issues affect some parts of the world more than others, ultimately we’re all impacted, because the planet is changing, due to major problems like global warming, and because we’re all human beings. We need to ask ourselves how new technologies and knowledge can help us tackle major health challenges.”

Striving Towards a Centre of Excellence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healthcare Delivery: The Inala Model
May 08, 2017, 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM Keynote
Lack of appropriate health service provision for Aboriginal and Torres Strait people in Australia still remains an important social determinant of ill health. Historically, health services have been absent or inappropriate. Cultural factors, financial factors and distance from health services have been important barriers limiting indigenous access to mainstream health services. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people access primary and specialist care poorly. Only five percent of our indigenous patients were accessing hospital-based specialist clinics.
Chairs: - Malcom King Simon Fraser University, Canada
Speakers: - Noel Hayman Clinical Director, Inala Indigenous Health Service, Australia

Health Professionals in the 21st Century: What Will We Need Humans For?
May 09, 2017, 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM Keynote
Everywhere we look, dramatic shifts in technology are changing the way we conduct our lives. Banking and buying are online. We enter a concert, a movie or board a flight with a barcode. Inside our clinics and operating rooms, robotics and systems that employ artificial intelligence are augmenting – and in some cases will one day replace – the work of human health professionals. The word often used to describe this changing landscape is “disruption”. Despite this, health profession education is proving very slow in preparing for the changes ahead.
Chairs: - Pierre Fournier Dean, School of Public Health, Université de Montréal, Canada
Speakers: - Brian Hodges Executive Vice-President Education, University Health Network, Canada
