Newsletter 03/2021: #WHS2021 Speakers, Regional Meeting, Birthday Wishes
|
Dear friends,
As much as we are all affected by the global pandemic, we can - and should - also learn from one another in tackling COVID-19. Global partnerships in health research enable innovation and better health.
Given the global threat posed by COVID-19, it is our responsibility as researchers and an educated society to use our collective expertise to combat the virus and develop therapies. But the global community needs more: to make real progress, it is crucial that we achieve universal health coverage. The Sustainable Development Goal 3 “Health for All” is yet to be reached and we must work together towards this and other health-related goals. We must understand that in the face of global threats, we are indeed only as strong as the weakest link.
Universal health coverage is an important step towards being better prepared for potential future pandemics and related challenges. Responding to threats like COVID-19 requires a broad societal approach, international collaboration among all sectors, and trusted public leadership.
To improve global health, international exchange and collaboration among diverse institutions from different sectors of society is highly important. The joint development of advanced methods is the key to sustainable innovations in medicine and science. Thus, the World Health Summit and the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, Universities and National Academies play an important role in bringing different actors together to advance toward the goal of Health for All.
Let us work together and try to make a real difference for global health. With kind regards,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DETLEV GANTEN!
|
On Sunday, March 28 we all celebrate the 80th birthday of Detlev Ganten, founder of the World Health Summit.
Detlev is a specialist in pharmacology and molecular medicine and one of the world’s leading scientists in the field of cardiovascular diseases. He was President of the Helmholtz Association, a member of the National Ethics Council and chairman of the board of Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch. He has received many international awards for his work in research.
In 2009 Detlev Ganten initiated the World Health Summit on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of Charité as an international, interdisciplinary conference in Berlin and stayed our president until the end of 2020.
"There is nothing more important than working for the health of individual people, especially those in need, but also for better health of all people around the world. Health is an entry point and directly related to all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ranging from No Poverty and No Hunger to Life Below Water and Life On Land to Partnership for the Goals. Let us work together for this noble humanitarian cause: healthy lives on a healthy planet!”
Happy Birthday, dear Detlev!
