1. Brief History
Founded in 1995 from the merger of all public hospitals in Geneva, the Geneva University Hospitals (French: Hôpitaux universitaires de Genève, HUG) are heirs to a centuries-long tradition of excellence in medicine and science, with precursors dating back to the founding of the first general state hospital in Geneva in 1535. The HUG operate 8 hospitals in the Canton of Geneva, as well as 40 outpatient clinics, and manage a research program closely linked to the Faculty of Medicine of Geneva. Their combined fields of expertise ensure the patients’ access to the latest in technological developments and medical progress.
Outstanding Alumni and Faculty Members include:
- Didier Pittet - Director of the Infection Control Programme and WHO Collaborating Centre on Patient Safety, University Hospital of Geneva – was awarded the Honorary Commander of the British Empire in 2007 in recognition of his services related to the prevention of healthcare-associated infections in the UK.
- Pierre-Yves Dietrich – medical oncologist and cancer researcher – named Cancer Researcher of the Year by Gateway for Cancer Research.
- Thierry Berney – President of the European Society for Organ Transplantation ESOT

3. Research
Focus / Key Aspects:
Research activities are an integral part of the mission of the HUG and are performed in close collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva. Through research, the HUG have reached a high level of excellence in many leading disciplines and cooperate actively with high-profile European and national projects.
Clinical Research Center
The clinical research center's mission is to promote patient-oriented clinical research within HUG and the Faculty of Medicine by developing translational research in line with the priorities defined by the two institutions.
The Centre has received support from the National Scientific Fund, which funded its implementation from 2008 to 2012. It continues to develop with the support of the Medical Faculty and the HUG.

Care Research Projects
HUG’s Care Directorate has established a research agenda to identify priorities for research in care as well as to coordinate and guide research activities in the field of care, including research into:

- symptom management,
- therapeutic education and health behaviors,
- innovative interventions,
- translation of good practice in care and
- organization and delivery of care.
HUG maintain a strong commitment to participation in interdisciplinary projects regarding evaluation and improvement of quality of care.
